Ekkodalen

The Hanging Girl

Ekkodalen is a valley on Bornholm that served as a private meeting place for Inge Dalby and Frank Brennan while they were involved. Its brief walk from the folk school made it accessible, but its position behind the school also kept their meetings apart from ordinary public view; it is where their relationship’s disappearance became tangible when Frank stopped coming.

Setting and Use

Before the folk school, Inge and Frank met at an agreed spot in the square in Rønne. At the school, they instead arranged to meet in Ekkodalen, which Inge described as reachable by going down behind the school in about five minutes. The account gives the valley no further physical description, but its route and agreed-upon use establish it as a discreet rendezvous rather than a chance meeting place.

The Relationship Ends Here

Frank ended the arrangement without an explanation. One day, he failed to appear as agreed; Inge returned to Ekkodalen several times, but he never came back. The valley thus marks the point at which their meetings—and, for Inge, the relationship—were left without a direct farewell. Asked whether Frank had also met Alberte there, Inge said she did not know where or how he had met her, only that Alberte often stood out on the road. Ekkodalen remains a possible but unconfirmed link to Alberte, not an established meeting place between them.
